Updates to website. New  Mezoscope!

3/6/2015

I'm in the process of updating the website, so forgive me if the blog comments don't work perfectly, but the exciting news is the new Mezoscope is installed at TechCyte Inc. in Salt Lake City, Utah. Techcyte is part of the highly successful ThinkAtomic technology incubator in the 'New Silicon Valley' of SLC. We've had a great experience designing and installing the new scope, and meeting some of TechCyte's challenging requirements has resulted in new innovative designs, software, and controller modifications.
We can now achieve not only 4x, 10x, 20x, 40x, but also with the new 5-head turret and precision positioning we are achieving 100x (in oil and air, no kidding) of blood smear samples. Here is one sample (size reduced for web). Clicking on the image below will expand to very large size and take some time to load as it is ~4Mb jpg compressed. This tiled mosaic image was acquired in under 2 min and the original image is approximately 10000x8000 pixels.
Email me for more info on the new Mezoscope.

ETSY store on hold .

2/26/2015

The Etsy store is on hold for the time being while I negotiate new 3-D printing prices. The smaller items are about the same but prices for the larger items have skyrocketed. I'm negotiating with several places (e.g. Shapeways, Local shops which are preferred, and regional shops with SLS technology and metal materials).

Meanwhile, I can still certainly produce all of the meshagons, but since I can't get definitive prices right now, each will have to be custom quoted until I can get fixed prices to post on Etsy.

Please email me for any items or information (tcd@tcdoe.com).
Thanks.

Meshagon 'Store' is now up and running on Etsy.
Thanks for all the suggestions and inquries/requests!

I tried to get the store working on my local site but it was dropping orders, etc (sorry for any missed orders!)...
So, I decided to go with Etsy for the storefront.
You can order your meshagon, or email me (tcd@tcdoe.com) for unique and/or custom meshagons.

Meshing the 'MOCA' building

4/25/2014

I recently visited the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Cleveland. It was really incredible to see the building and the art exhibits. Very inspiring. I met with some very kind staff there and showed them some of the 'meshagons', considering a potential exhibit. We got to talking and it was quite an exciting discussion. Then, it occurred to me... "how about meshing the building itself"?
It is a prismatic shape so it should be do-able. I downloaded the structure/dimensions from Google (i.e. Sketchup) and after about 2 weeks of work , here are some pics of the building and the new mesh.  I'm hoping that this would be a great addition to their collection. It would be nice in the lobby, etc.
See below...

Pictures of the MOCA building. It is quite an amazing/interesting structure...

Renderings of manifold (printable) FE mesh of the MOCA structure. I have been learning 'cycles' in Blender3D and it looks great! This is what I envision what the mesh would look like viewed in a room/lobby/space. The mesh is confirmed printable in Shapeways and possibly Gigabot at even one meter  height. It could be a quite a stunning art/math/sculpture for MOCA. Click on the images for larger views.

Here is a 3-D rotatable model of the MOCA building mesh in SketchFab. Note that i've rendered this in 'gray' because the black polymer (Which I actually prefer and is shown the renders above) does not look good in SketchFab. NOTE2 these takesa while to load because the mesh is quite large. If you are on a mac/apple use firefox to view. Safari doesn't appear to work.
Below is a wire-frame rendering of the MOCA mesh that shows the very high quality polygon (triangular) surface ready for printing. It's actually quite aesthetically interesting to put this in full-screen and zoom in to the middle... quite 'whoa' IMHO.

Ellipsoid ready! and website ready!

Well, the mad mad ellipsoid challenge is ready. And the website is so close.
I made a quick 'mockup' in Blender to give some idea what this would look like in a 'space' such as a den or living room.

I also designed a stand that can be printed as well (probably best in black but sandstone could be good too). The stand is modifiable.  I'm getting more (and more) interested in the architectural and design potentials for 'meshagons' (e.g. see Emerging Objects website, it's very nice).

Website is looking good. The big problem right now is porting to my own site (tcdoe.com). I've been up all night trying to figure this one out.

New large-scale microscopy images.

New images from the 'mezoscope' are looking pretty good. I think that in addition to the scientific value there is also some quite interesting artistic value to the images.

What you are seeing (left) is an elliptically polarized light image of a breast biopsy/retrieval specimen. The patterns are collagen fibers, which 'self-illuminate' under polarized light.

The original image is about 30000x20000 pixels so it's practically 'poster size'.

I've updated the 'old' tensortek mezoscope site with some new images and a 'Zoomify' section where you can view some of the gigapixel images interactively.

Ellipsiod challenge

Working on the most challenging problem yet.
A huge 'ellipsoid' or toroidal ellipse sculpture.

This one took 14 hours to build on my semi-old computer. I need more memory. But, it worked!

It's fully 'manifold', which means that technically it's water-tight and printable. I can't afford to print it though. About 300 bucks at least. It's submitted to Shapeways so we'll see how much in a day or so.

Still, its 400 mm high and would look incredible as a printed sculpture.

Meanwhile work goes on for the website.
It's getting there.
